Aug. 13, 2013 — Wisconsin has approved 13 insurance companies to sell individual plans in the new health insurance Marketplace created under the Affordable Care Act. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, which completed the initial review, did not release any details about plans or costs. The plans now face federal review before they become available for open enrollment starting Oct. 1.  

The 13 companies are:

FRIDAY, Aug. 9 (HealthDay News) — Pictures can make a strong impression: People who see images of skin cancer are more likely to do skin examinations, according to a new study.

An evidence review concluded that people who saw pictures of skin cancer were motivated to check their skin more often and accurately. Text descriptions of skin cancer alone were not effective in promoting skin self-examination.

The study was published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

“Visual images capture our attention and are persuasive. They also help us to learn and remember,” study co-author Laurie Hoffman-Goetz, a professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada, said in a university news release.

The findings could help improve early detection of skin cancer, including deadly melanoma.

“Skin self-examination plays an important role in detecting melanoma early. Many cases of melanoma are first detected by patients themselves,” study co-author Jennifer McWhirter, a Ph.D. candidate, said in the news release.

“Incorporating images into clinical practice when educating patients can be a powerful tool in the fight against skin cancer,” Hoffman-Goetz added.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in North America, the authors noted in the news release

July 2013 Last updated at 23:04 GMT  Optimism in the UK’s service sector is growing Business confidence in the UK is at its highest point since May last year, according to a new report.

The Optimism Index by the accountancy and business advisory firm BDO moved higher for the fifth consecutive month in June.

BDO said confidence in both services and manufacturing firms had increased.

However, it added that the figures remained fractionally below the level which would indicate the economy was expected to grow.

BDO said that despite growing confidence, pressures such as volatility in the eurozone, “belt-tightening” by UK consumers and a signalling by the US Federal Reserve that its stimulus measures may taper off later in the year are weighing on business optimism going forward.

‘Zig-zag trend’

BDO partner Peter Hemington said: “While it’s encouraging to see confidence continuing to improve, we should be mindful of the zig-zag trend that has characterised UK business confidence since 2008.”

“Periods of improved confidence have ended before growth has really begun to get going.”

BDO’s Optimism Index which predicts business performance two quarters ahead, moved up for the fifth consecutive month in June from 93.6 to 94.3, a 13-month high.

Meanwhile, BDO’s Output Index, which looks at sales predictions in the short-run, increased for the fourth consecutive month to 94.9 in June from 94.4 in May.

Under BDO’s calculations 95.0 indicates growth.

The indices are calculated by taking a weighted average of the results of the UK’s main business surveys, including those from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Bank of England.

As skin disorder worsened, likelihood of multiple diseases rose, researchers found

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 7 (HealthDay News) — People with the skin disease psoriasis may be at increased risk for other majorhealth problems, according to a new study.

The link between psoriasis, which is characterized by irritated, red patches of skin, and other medical conditions has been unclear. In this study, published online Aug. 7 in the journal JAMA Dermatology, researchers analyzed data from more than 9,000 British psoriasis patients, aged 25 to 64. They compared them with more than 90,000 age-matched people without psoriasis.

Among the psoriasis patients, the disease was mild in nearly 52 percent, moderate in nearly 36 percent and severe in about 12 percent.

The analysis revealed that people with psoriasis had higher rates of chronic lung disease, diabetes, mild liver disease, heart attack, peptic ulcer, peripheral vascular disease, kidney disease and rheumatologic disease.

The risk of having these types of health problems increased with the severity of psoriasis, said Howa Yeung, of the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues.

“Physicians should be aware of these associations in providing comprehensive care to patients with psoriasis, especially those presenting with more severe disease,” Yeung and colleagues concluded in a journal news release.

Although the study found an association between having psoriasis and increased risk of other diseases, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 307 in 37 States The Economic Times Business News

More than 300 people in 37 states have been sickened to date in a major multistate outbreak of salmonella infection linked to baby poultry, U.S. government health officials reported Friday.

The report showed that 307 people have become infected with Salmonella Typhimurium, and that 60 percent of them were children aged 10 or younger.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a news release, said “Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback findings have linked this outbreak ….. to contact with chicks, ducklings, and other live baby poultry purchased from multiple feed stores and sourced from multiple mail-order hatcheries.”

According to the CDC, the number of ill persons identified in each state was: Alabama (1), Arizona (7), California (9), Colorado (37) Florida (5), Georgia (4), Idaho (3), Illinois (1), Indiana (10), Iowa (7), Kansas (15), Kentucky (4), Louisiana (9), Massachusetts (2), Minnesota (3), Mississippi (6), Missouri (18), Montana (2), Nebraska (14), Nevada (1), New Hampshire (1), New Mexico (16), New York (17), North Dakota (5), Oklahoma (15), Oregon (10), South Carolina (1), Tennessee (2), Texas (32), Utah (10), Vermont (1), Washington (19), West Virginia (1), Wisconsin (5), and Wyoming (4).

The CDC also said that among the 193 sickened persons with available information, 25 percent have been hospitalized.

The earliest date of reported illness associated with this six-month outbreak was March 4. But efforts to determine the ultimate source of the infected poultry have been challenging because of the complicated distribution network for these birds, the CDC said.

To guard against infection, the agency urged consumers to always wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching live poultry or anything in the area where they live and roam.

They have built sports facilities, parks, and a splendid corniche in the capital with a seaside promenade and parkour stations; hosted fun runs with hefty cash prizes; set up free body mass index and blood pressure monitoring stations. Anything money can buy to coax their citizens — said to be first-richest in the world and sixth-fattest — out of a sedentary lifestyle, they seem to have bought.

The only thing is, even Qatar’s great wealth has not been able to do anything about the weather, and in a country where highs top 100 degrees Fahrenheit for six months of the year, getting anyone to go out and walk, let alone do outdoor sports, is a lost cause. About the only pedestrians in the summer, when temperatures can top 120 degrees, are expats.

Now the sports health authorities have introduced an ambitious new program, called “Step Into Health: Walk More, Walk the Mall,” that aims to reach Qataris where they live, or at least where they shop — the climate-controlled shopping mall.

Four of the emirate’s major malls are participating, posting maps and walking routes, along with information about how many calories could be burned in the process. The malls are also opening their halls two hours before and after shopping hours, for those who want their exercise free of consumerism.

“Mall walking is the perfect workout, alongside controlled temperatures; it provides a clean and safe environment to exercise,” a promotional brochure for “Step Into Health” reads.

The mall walk program is part of a broader effort to encourage Qataris “to walk 10,000 steps and more a day in a noncompetitive, recreational and social way.”

The organizers hasten to reassure people that mall walking need not be strenuous. “Unlike most community exercise programs,Step Into Health is not about working up a sweat,” they say.

The walking routes and speeds they have outlined are not likely to do that — although they will allow plenty of time for window shopping along the way.

At the Hyatt Plaza mall, the designated route (it happens to go by every shop) is 1,200 steps long and should burn 70 calories. The recommended duration is 12 minutes, rather closer to an amble than a power walk.

The sponsors of the effort are part of the Aspire Zone Foundation, a governmental organization that, among other things, is promoting professional sports in Qatar and is involved in preparations for the 2022 World Cup. FIFA, the world soccer governing body, stunned the world when it awarded the games to Qatar, since it is a summer event. The prospect of staging world-class soccer in bone-melting heat prompted two proposals still under discussion: changing the World Cup to winter, or air-conditioning all of Qatar’s dozen or so giant stadiums.

Officials associated with Aspire and the Step Into Health program were not available for comment, despite repeated requests.

Obesity is a touchy subject in the emirate. Data from the International Association for the Study of Obesity shows that Qatar has the highest obesity rates in the Mideast, and worse rates are mostly found only in a few South Pacific countries. Some 34 percent of Qatar’s men and 45 percent of its women are obese, defined as a body mass index of more than 30.

Those figures, however, only begin to tell the tale. They are based on the emirate’s total population of about 1.9 million, but most of those are migrant workers. Qatari citizens number only about 250,000. Since most of the migrant workers are construction and other manual laborers, obesity rates among citizens are likely to be far higher than overall figures suggest.

The mall-walking kickoff two weeks ago was pronounced a big success by the government-controlled press, with some 1,000 people showing up to take part — encouraged by handouts of pedometers (free to anyone who registers for Step Into Health), and free raffles of iPhones, laptops and other Qatari-size baubles.

After that initial outpouring of interest, however, there was relatively little follow-up — a common phenomenon, as every gym manager knows. Soon after, the participating malls were nearly as empty in those shopping-free hours as ever.

There was no small amount of skepticism among mall shoppers one recent night.

“Walking at the mall?” asked Abdul Aziz, a retired hotelier strolling purposefully but with only retail intent at the Hyatt Plaza. “We’re doing that already.”

Khalid Yazidy, 29, a government employee, said: “Personally, I think they want people to spend more time at the malls so they can spend more money at the malls. They’re saying: ‘Don’t go outside. Spend more.’ ”

Mohammad Salek, a 15-year-old who attends a British private school here, said he did not see any need to walk more since he was devout. “When you are praying, you burn 880 calories,” he said, adding that was if you counted all five times a day.

Compared with just 70 for a walk in the mall? Hard to argue against prayer.

 (HealthDay News) -- About nine percent of all asthma cases in the United States are caused or made worse by work-related exposures, a new federal study says.That means work-related asthma affects about 1.4 million adults annually, the researchers said.State-by-state rates of workplace-related asthma ranged from 4.8 percent (Arizona) to just over 14 percent (Florida), according to the study by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The analysis of 2006-09 data from 38 states and the District of Columbia also suggests that older workers and those in certain ethnic or minority groups are most at risk. For example, rates of employment-related asthma were 12.7 percent for people ages 45-64 vs. about 7 percent for people ages 18-44. Among racial groups rates of work-related asthma were 12.5 percent for blacks, 10.5 percent for Hispanics and 8.2 percent for whites, the report found.The estimated proportion of adults with current asthma who had work-related asthma was similar for men and women, at about nine percent.Asthma linked to on-the-job exposures is a preventable but under-recognized illness and the new findings highlight the need to expand workplace surveillance to better understand the risk factors and to better focus prevention efforts, the researchers said.Better surveillance of the problem "would enhance our understanding of work-related asthma epidemiology and enable states, other government agencies, health professionals, employers, workers and worker representatives to better target intervention efforts to reduce the burden of work-related asthma," the researchers wrote in a summary.The study appears in the May 25 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Vitamin B Supplement Contains Anabolic Steroids

A product marketed as a vitamin B dietary supplement contains two potentially harmful anabolic steroids and should not be used by consumers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.
Laboratory analysis showed that Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 contains methasterone and dimethazine. These ingredients are not listed on the label and should not be in a dietary supplement.
The FDA has received reports of 29 incidents of health problems associated with the product, including fatigue, muscle cramping, muscle pain, and problems with liver and thyroid function and cholesterol levels.
Women who used this product reported unusual hair growth and missed periods, and men who used the product reported impotence and low testosterone. People who take Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 and experience any of these symptoms should consult a doctor and report the incident to the FDA, the agency said.
Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 is made by Mira Health Products Ltd. in Farmingdale, N.Y., and sold on various websites and in retail stores. The company has refused to voluntarily recall the product or to warn consumers about the potential for injury.
Taking products that contain anabolic steroids may cause liver damage. Some of the people who took Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 had to be hospitalized, but there were no reports of death or liver failure, the FDA said.
Anabolic steroids can cause other serious long-term consequences in women, men and children, including: harmful changes in levels of blood fats; increased risk of heart attack and stroke; masculinization of women; shrinkage of the testicles; breast enlargement; infertility in males; and short stature in children.

Scientists say finding has potential to lead to new obesity treatments

THURSDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've found a "toggle switch" that controls whether fat cells in the body burn up or store their energy.

The switch is the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a protein that binds with vitamin D. Along with many already identified functions, it also determines whether fat cells become the brown, energy-burning type or the white, energy-storing type, according to the researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine.

"When we first made this discovery, we were curious about whether the amount of vitamin D that people were taking might be decreasing how much brown fat they had," study senior author Dr. Brian Feldman, an assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology, said in a university news release.

"But so far our data show that this activity of the receptor is independent of vitamin D, so people's ingestion or reserves of vitamin D are unlikely to be affecting this process," he said.

The researchers said their discovery could lead to new ways to control obesity and related conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

The study was published online Aug. 1 in the journal Molecular Endocrinology.

It's unclear if VDR actually causes white-fat cells to turn into brown-fat cells, or if the protein determines white or brown before a cell actually develops into a fat cell. The latter explanation is probably the right one, the study authors said. But whichever is correct, it doesn't affect the potential for developing new obesity treatments.

The researchers have already started working on developing a therapy targeting VDR. The goal is to prevent VDR from blocking development of brown fat without affecting the protein's other functions, Feldman said.

Even if the obesity treatment they're trying to develop proves effective, it would be years before it could be made available to patients.

Anemia affects up to 23 percent of the elderly, the researchers say.

"We found a 60 percent increased risk of dementia with anemia. After controlling for other factors such as other medical illnesses, demographics, etc., the risk remained high of 40 to 50 percent, "said the lead author of the study Dr. Kristine Yaffe, professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

"Given how common both anemia and dementia in the elderly, are more attention to the connection between the two is important, and I think older adults for anemia screening makes sense, said Yaffe.

The study of more than 2,500 men and women with 70 in fact does not prove that this anemia causes dementia, however.

"Because we studied prospectively, we think that the best I can tell, this anemia is causally related to dementia, but observational studies one can never say for sure."But we did our best to exclude other explanations, said Yaffe.

The work of red blood cells is to carry oxygen throughout the body. When you're anemic, less oxygen is delivered to the cells of the brain, Yaffe said. "We feel that the Association is on low oxygen transported to the brain," she said.

Anemia can also indicate overall health problems, noted the authors of the study. Causes of iron deficiency include anemia and blood loss. Cancer, kidney failure and certain chronic diseases can also lead to anemia.

During the study, all participants were tested for anemia and led to memory and thinking tests over 11 years.

Almost 400 participants were anemic at the beginning of the study. Throughout the study, about 18 percent of dementia developed-455--of participants, researchers found.

Of participants with anemia, 23 percent developed dementia, compared with 17% of those who were not anemic.

People who were anemic at the beginning of the study had 41% higher risk of developing dementia than those without anemia after the researchers took into account factors such as age, race, gender and education.

Additional research is needed to confirm this Association before they are made recommendations on the prevention of dementia, suggested that the authors of the study.

Sixteen other cases of developing melanoma within tattoos were reported in English-language magazines, said that the authors of the study.

"In General, tattoos should never be placed in pigmented lesions; If they are, the tattoos should never be handled by the laser, "said the researchers, who were led by Dr. Laura Pohl of Laserklinik Karlsruhe.

Dermatologists in the United States agree that the moles should be forbidden areas for tattoos.

WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a Massachusetts man is charged with attempted murder for allegedly poisoning the iced coffee of a man who had hoped to testify at James "Whitey" Bulger's trial.

A jogger found Stephen Rakes' body July 17 in the woods in the Boston suburb of Lincoln. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan says the investigation indicated 69-year-old William Camuti of Sudbury owed Rakes money and acted alone.

A murder charge has not been filed because the medical examiner is still waiting on test results.

Prosecutors say Rakes and his former wife were forced to sell Bulger their South Boston liquor store in 1984 to use as a headquarters for his gang.

Rakes had looked forward to testifying but learned the day before his body was found that prosecutors wouldn't call him.
