Vitamin B Supplement Contains Anabolic Steroids
Vitamin B Supplement Contains Anabolic Steroids
A product marketed as a vitamin B dietary supplement contains two potentially harmful anabolic steroids and should not be used by consumers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.
Laboratory analysis showed that Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 contains methasterone and dimethazine. These ingredients are not listed on the label and should not be in a dietary supplement.
The FDA has received reports of 29 incidents of health problems associated with the product, including fatigue, muscle cramping, muscle pain, and problems with liver and thyroid function and cholesterol levels.
Women who used this product reported unusual hair growth and missed periods, and men who used the product reported impotence and low testosterone. People who take Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 and experience any of these symptoms should consult a doctor and report the incident to the FDA, the agency said.
Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 is made by Mira Health Products Ltd. in Farmingdale, N.Y., and sold on various websites and in retail stores. The company has refused to voluntarily recall the product or to warn consumers about the potential for injury.
Taking products that contain anabolic steroids may cause liver damage. Some of the people who took Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 had to be hospitalized, but there were no reports of death or liver failure, the FDA said.
Anabolic steroids can cause other serious long-term consequences in women, men and children, including: harmful changes in levels of blood fats; increased risk of heart attack and stroke; masculinization of women; shrinkage of the testicles; breast enlargement; infertility in males; and short stature in children.
Fat-Cell 'Switch' May Determine Whether Body Stores Energy or Burns It
AppId is over the quota
Scientists say finding has potential to lead to new obesity treatments
By Robert Preidt
HealthDay ReporterTHURSDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've found a "toggle switch" that controls whether fat cells in the body burn up or store their energy.
The switch is the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a protein that binds with vitamin D. Along with many already identified functions, it also determines whether fat cells become the brown, energy-burning type or the white, energy-storing type, according to the researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine.
"When we first made this discovery, we were curious about whether the amount of vitamin D that people were taking might be decreasing how much brown fat they had," study senior author Dr. Brian Feldman, an assistant professor of pediatric endocrinology, said in a university news release.
"But so far our data show that this activity of the receptor is independent of vitamin D, so people's ingestion or reserves of vitamin D are unlikely to be affecting this process," he said.
The researchers said their discovery could lead to new ways to control obesity and related conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.
The study was published online Aug. 1 in the journal Molecular Endocrinology.
It's unclear if VDR actually causes white-fat cells to turn into brown-fat cells, or if the protein determines white or brown before a cell actually develops into a fat cell. The latter explanation is probably the right one, the study authors said. But whichever is correct, it doesn't affect the potential for developing new obesity treatments.
The researchers have already started working on developing a therapy targeting VDR. The goal is to prevent VDR from blocking development of brown fat without affecting the protein's other functions, Feldman said.
Even if the obesity treatment they're trying to develop proves effective, it would be years before it could be made available to patients.

Anemia may increase your risk of dementia, study suggests

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay reporterWednesday, July 31 (HealthDay News)--Elderly suffering from anemia.--lower than normal levels of red blood cells.--may be at increased risk for dementia, a new study suggests.
Anemia affects up to 23 percent of the elderly, the researchers say.
"We found a 60 percent increased risk of dementia with anemia. After controlling for other factors such as other medical illnesses, demographics, etc., the risk remained high of 40 to 50 percent, "said the lead author of the study Dr. Kristine Yaffe, professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco.
"Given how common both anemia and dementia in the elderly, are more attention to the connection between the two is important, and I think older adults for anemia screening makes sense, said Yaffe.
The study of more than 2,500 men and women with 70 in fact does not prove that this anemia causes dementia, however.
"Because we studied prospectively, we think that the best I can tell, this anemia is causally related to dementia, but observational studies one can never say for sure."But we did our best to exclude other explanations, said Yaffe.
The work of red blood cells is to carry oxygen throughout the body. When you're anemic, less oxygen is delivered to the cells of the brain, Yaffe said. "We feel that the Association is on low oxygen transported to the brain," she said.
Anemia can also indicate overall health problems, noted the authors of the study. Causes of iron deficiency include anemia and blood loss. Cancer, kidney failure and certain chronic diseases can also lead to anemia.
The study, published online on July 31 in neurology.--I should remind you that doctors that many conditions can lead to dementia, and treat them can stave off mental decline, said an expert.
"A concern with the increased visibility and the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is that some doctors will be tempted to jump right into this diagnosis without first having followed the rule ' discard ' reversible causes," said Dr. Sam Gandy, Director of the Mount Sinai Center for cognitive health in New York City. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.
"We must always seek to exclude treatable, reversible causes of dementia, depression, nutritional deficiencies, endocrine and metabolic disorders before rushing into a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease," he said.
During the study, all participants were tested for anemia and led to memory and thinking tests over 11 years.
Almost 400 participants were anemic at the beginning of the study. Throughout the study, about 18 percent of dementia developed-455--of participants, researchers found.
Of participants with anemia, 23 percent developed dementia, compared with 17% of those who were not anemic.
People who were anemic at the beginning of the study had 41% higher risk of developing dementia than those without anemia after the researchers took into account factors such as age, race, gender and education.
Additional research is needed to confirm this Association before they are made recommendations on the prevention of dementia, suggested that the authors of the study.
Tattoos can hide malignant Melanomas, say experts

By Robert Preidt
HealthDay reporterWednesday, July 31 (HealthDay News)--millions of Americans head to the tattoo parlor to get "inked" each year, but a new study suggests that getting a tattoo over a birthmark or signal may not be healthy.
That's why having a tattoo on a signal especially can make it difficult to detect the development of skin cancer, the researchers said.
-Reports on July 31 in the journal JAMA Dermatology, researchers in Germany point to the case of a young man who developed melanoma in a pre-existing colored skin lesion (mole or birthmark) within a tattoo during and between the phases of laser tattoo removal.
Sixteen other cases of developing melanoma within tattoos were reported in English-language magazines, said that the authors of the study.
"In General, tattoos should never be placed in pigmented lesions; If they are, the tattoos should never be handled by the laser, "said the researchers, who were led by Dr. Laura Pohl of Laserklinik Karlsruhe.
Dermatologists in the United States agree that the moles should be forbidden areas for tattoos.
"Fifty percent of all melanomas develop in pre-existing moles," said Dr. Hooman Khorasani Icahn medical school at Mount Sinai in New York. "It is more difficult to do the monitoring on the moles that are covered with tattoos, the tattoo ink camouflages the mole and sometimes interferes with some of the tools we use for detection".
Tattoo removal can make soft surveillance too, he said.
"Once you start removing the laser, the laser can also remove the pigment that make melanoma cells called melanocytes," Khorasani said. "Therefore, any irregular pigment that one would expect for detect will not be detected so easily. This is the reason that some subtypes of melanoma, called the amelanótico melanoma, are more dangerous and aggressive. "
"If possible, avoid darker tattoos ink directly on the wart, as they can camouflage your wart and make monitoring more challenging," Khorasani advised patients considering a new tattoo.
If the removal is in order, "always your moles a biopsy before to have them treated with any type of laser," Khorasani said. "If you have a lot of moles under his tattoo, try consulting a dermatologist accredited twice a year instead of once a year," as recommended for the general population.
The German study authors agreed that regular skin reviews Khorasani should be conducted, while people are undergoing laser tattoo removal. If there is any suspicion about skin cancer, the lesion must be removed before starting the laser tattoo removal, they said.
Could help spur tattoos a melanoma? Dr. Doris Day, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, said that "it is unlikely that the incidence of melanoma is higher in tattoos due to tattoo ink or process."
She agreed, however, with other experts that "the tattoo can hide a melanoma that is arising from previously normal skin or a mole that is covered by the ink of the tattoo".
Stephen Rakes, Whitey Bulger Witness, Was Poisoned By Man Who Acted Alone, DA Says
AppId is over the quota
WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a Massachusetts man is charged with attempted murder for allegedly poisoning the iced coffee of a man who had hoped to testify at James "Whitey" Bulger's trial.
A jogger found Stephen Rakes' body July 17 in the woods in the Boston suburb of Lincoln. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan says the investigation indicated 69-year-old William Camuti of Sudbury owed Rakes money and acted alone.
A murder charge has not been filed because the medical examiner is still waiting on test results.
Prosecutors say Rakes and his former wife were forced to sell Bulger their South Boston liquor store in 1984 to use as a headquarters for his gang.
Rakes had looked forward to testifying but learned the day before his body was found that prosecutors wouldn't call him.

Nick Cannon Writes Open Letter To Amanda Bynes, Calls Her 'Family'
AppId is over the quota

Nick Cannon and Amanda Bynes first met when they were bright, young Nickelodeon stars more than a decade ago. Since then, he went on to marry Mariah Carey and become a popular television host, while she catapulted to silver-screen fame and then spiraled out of control.
In a touching post on his personal website Wednedsay, Cannon wrote an open letter to Bynes, saying that the issue is no laughing matter and referring to her as his "family."
"I tweeted a few weeks about how the entertainment industry just consumes people and spits them out like flavorless bubblegum," he wrote. "A few chews of enjoyment then they’re under a city bus bench. Don’t get me wrong this is not a pity for the popular statement. I am always the first to say that fame and entertainment is one of the best and easiest occupations to ever have, but one must know how to navigate through the matrix or you may find yourself in a very dark hole."
He goes on to say, "Imagine being the breadwinner in your household before you can even drive" or never hearing the word "no." Although being a celebrity comes with fame and fortune, it also comes with its pitfalls, he noted. A lack of balance, no sufficient support system and media scrutiny are just some of the challenges.
He concluded his post with a direct message to Bynes:
So I say to my sister Amanda Bynes you’re not alone. I’m here for you. I understand. I care and I appreciate you, because that’s what family does and that’s what family is for. I also extend this to anyone else in my life, past or present that may find themselves in hard times. I’m here! Call me! Because I truly believe, the hand you’re helping up today may be the one you’re reaching for tomorrow. So not to be all cheesy and over sentimental but I got to end this with the ingenious Wither’s lyrics "Lean on me when you’re not strong and I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long until I’ll need somebody to lean on.”
The "America's Got Talent" host spoke with InTouch magazine this week and said he had reached out to the troubled star within the past six weeks. He continues to pray that she will get better and get the help she needs.
Other former child stars have previously spoken out about Bynes' meltdown. Evan Rachel Wood tweeted, “You know, we sit back and watch these ‘child stars’ lose their childhood. And then we wonder why they grow up and lose their minds.”
Bynes is currently under involuntary psychiatric hold in a Ventura, Calif., facility, the Los Angeles Times notes. She was detained on July 22 for starting a fire in the driveway of a Thousand Oaks home belonging to an elderly woman she has no connection to. The 5150 hold came after months of increasingly bizarre behavior. The actress has appealed a judge's order for her to remain in the facility for 14 days.

Kim Kardashian's Baby Photo On Facebook Is Not Of North West, And Her 'Friends' Are Not Too Happy

Kim Kardashian uploaded a photo of herself holding a newborn to Facebook with the caption "Love these precious moments..." Perhaps by "precious moments" she is referring to baby North fake-outs -- although at least Kris Jenner's imposter wasn't over 3 years old.
(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));The photo is reportedly Kourtney's son Mason Disick, and it is definitely not a coveted picture of North West. Kim's "friends" were quick to note the photo was deliberately misleading. The ire, expressed in over 3,500 comments on the photo, is best summed up by the response from Anabel Ibarra Covarrubias: "Enough kim !! We already know this is not ur baby north west !! ... U want millions of dollars just to see ur baby ? C'mom ... Ur baby worth that money? Cuz i dont think so !!!"
According to Radar Online, Kim was spotted out and about in Southern California, though keeping a low profile, and avoiding the paparazzi. A source also told the tabloid that "Kim is excited to have the whole world see her baby." Although it looks like we'll have to wait (and probably encounter a few more Nori poseurs) before we finally get to "see how beautiful she is."

But Middle East respiratory virus has high death rates among people with chronic illnesses

By Robert Preidt
HealthDay Reporter
FRIDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Important differences between Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) suggest that MERS won't prove as dangerous as SARS, researchers report.
MERS emerged last year in Saudi Arabia and nearly all cases of infection have been reported there, or in people who were infected with the virus there before traveling to other countries. Between Sept. 1, 2012, and June 15, 2013, there were 47 confirmed cases (46 adults, one child) of MERS infections in Saudi Arabia, according to the report published July 25 in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
As of July 24, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there had been 90 MERS cases worldwide.
An analysis of clinical records, laboratory results and other data revealed that older people, men and patients with chronic health problems are more likely to succumb to the disease, the investigators said.
Like those infected with SARS, people with MERS have a wide range of symptoms. Most patients admitted to the hospital had fever (98 percent), chills (87 percent), cough (83 percent), shortness of breath (72 percent) and muscle pain (32 percent). One-fourth of patients also had gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Unlike SARS, however, nearly all of the cases of MERS occurred in people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes (68 percent), high blood pressure (34 percent), chronic heart disease (28 percent) and chronic kidney disease (49 percent).
"Despite sharing some clinical similarities with SARS (e.g., fever, cough and incubation period), there are also some important differences, such as the rapid progression to respiratory failure, up to five days earlier than SARS," study leader Ziad Memish, the deputy minister for public health from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said in a journal news release.
"In contrast to SARS -- which was much more infectious, especially in health-care settings, and affected the healthier and the younger age group -- MERS appears to be more deadly, with 60 percent of patients with co-existing chronic illnesses dying, compared with the 1 percent to 2 percent toll of SARS," Memish said.
"Although this high mortality rate with MERS is probably spurious due to the fact that we are only picking up severe cases and missing a significant number of milder or asymptomatic cases, so far there is little to indicate that MERS will follow a similar path to SARS," Memish added.
Study co-author Ali Zumla, from University College London in the United Kingdom, said that "the recent identification of milder or asymptomatic cases of MERS in health-care workers, children and family members of contacts of MERS cases indicates that we are only reporting the tip of the iceberg of severe cases and there is a spectrum of milder clinical disease which requires urgent definition."
"Ultimately, the key will be to identify the source of MERS infection, predisposing factors for susceptibility to infection and the predictive factors for poor outcome," Zumla said in the news release. "Meanwhile, infection control measures within hospitals seem to work."
In an editorial accompanying the report, Christian Drosten, of the University of Bonn Medical Center in Germany, said there is an urgent need to develop accurate diagnostic tests to help focus efforts to control MERS and to minimize the risk of it spreading from infected patients to other people.
Ariel Castro Note: FBI agent says he found a letter trying to explain the actions of
Cleveland – standing before man kidnapped her and raped her for a decade, Michelle Knight described how the world has changed in the three months since the last saw each other. The captive, now free and oppression to be locked forever to die a little every day. "
Ariel Castro's fate was determined long before that, prison life in 1,000 years. But the Knight's words in the courtroom crowded final seal concrete shook the nation, three young women years of torment at the Castro's shaky.
"For 11 years, got it back," Knight says. "For 11 years. Your hell has just begun. "
Shortly thereafter, the school bus driver ex 53 apologized to his victims in court, this rambling short. He accused repeatedly of his sex addiction, his ex-wife and others while claiming the sex was consensual and that the woman was never tortured.
"These people are trying to paint me as a monster," he said. "I'm not a monster. I was sick ".
The verdict was a foregone conclusion given after Castro pleaded guilty last week, counts 937, including aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape and assault. A deal with prosecutors spared him a possible death sentence, Knight beats until she dropped.
During her statement, Knight was a few meters from Castro, seeing him for the first time since saved her in may from the House-turned-Castro jail with an alarm system, heavy wooden doors that cover the Windows.
"I will continue to live," she said. "You die a little every day.
The three women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 to 20 years. Each received a Castro. They ran on 6 may when Amanda Berry, now 27, broke some door to Castro's home in Cleveland neighborhood and shouted for help. Castro was arrested that evening.
Cleveland electric escape, where photos of the missing women still depend on the utility. Elation turned to despair as the details of distress emerged.
Prosecutors detailed Thursday repeated sexual assaults by Castro, peat, and asking for food or air.
They displayed pictures gave the first glimpse inside the rooms where the women lived. The bed lined and stuffed animals, paintings were pasted to the wall where Barry lived with a young daughter was fathered by Castro. One of the paintings on the shelf says, "happy birthday."
But in the same room, the window was closed and the door handles, the turntable was removed and replaced many locks.
Another room is shared by the Knight, Gina de Jesús were mobile services, radio clock necklaces.
Prosecutors said the women were tied in a basement bedroom furnace. One woman was a biker helmet resting on top while in the basement. Later, when she tried to run away, she had a wire wrapped around her neck.
FBI agent Andrew Burke said Castro will pay once his victims after raping them. And he would require them to pay him, if they want something from the store.
A letter written by Castro was found in the House days after the arrest, shown in court. It was titled "confession and details." he also wrote "I am a sex offender".
District Attorney Tim ?????'? McGinty said in the court filing that one of the women kept a diary.
"Talking values of forced sexual behavior, of being locked in a dark room, anticipating the next meeting of the abuse, one day dreams of escape, to reunite with his family, of being chained to the wall, held as a prisoner of war. Of treated like an animal, "said the filing.
Knight, 32, was the first woman was abducted after Castro to seduced her with the promise of a puppy for her son. She said. She cried all night because her years in captivity "has become the win."
"He tortured me all the time, especially during the holidays," Knight said. "Christmas was traumatic today because I got to spend it with my son."
She sat quietly as Castro claimed that women live a happy life with him.
"We had a lot of harmony that occur in this House," he said.
Castro called his daughter with Berry "child prodigy", argued with the referee because he didn't commit a violent crime.
He noted that the FBI was once close to him when the Feds with his daughter, who was walking home with de Jesus on the day she disappeared.
"Let these girls. Down when they questioned my daughter, "he said. "They failed to ask me."
He also said he never abused. Until he met his ex-wife, who died.
When Castro, Judge Michael Russo admitted Knight shows "remarkable restraint" in his statement. The judge then called Castro's claims that women live a happy life with him.
"I'm not sure there is anyone in America that I would agree with you," he said.
Castro's relatives were in the courtroom. De Jesus, also stayed away. Instead, family members to read their statements.
"We're going to assure you that our beloved family member, said Sylvia colon, a cousin of de Jesus. She laughs, swimming, dancing, and more important, he loved it. We comfort in knowing that she will continue to flourish. "
The women began rising from the privacy they sought after they escaped to freedom.
Berry made a surprise appearance on stage in a rap concert last weekend, is de Jesus made some remarks televised around the House.
